The pledges that ordinary people make can be bitter, malicious, or well-intentioned. If you are a practitioner of Mahayana Buddhism and aspire to emulate the spirit of the Buddha and bodhisattvas, you should take the Four Great Vows: vowing to deliver all sentient beings; vowing to cut off all afflictions; vowing to learn all Dharma methods; and vowing to attain supreme Buddhahood. The Four Great Vows are the basics for Buddhists, and all of them aim at delivering sentient beings. In order to save them, we should first eliminate our own afflictions.
